Fill with Symbols Tab
The following options are available:
| Option | Feature/s | Comment/Example |
| Angle | angle of the symbol rows with respect to a reference line (in degrees), reference lines: |
|
| Distance | distance between rows of symbols (in mm or m) | |
| Displacement | displacement (in mm or m) of the row of symbols with reference to the origin at (x,y)=(0,0) m | Positive values will shift the row of symbols to the left, negative values to the right, when looking from the start to the end point of the polygon. |
| Dist of | spacing of symbols among each other in direction of the symbol rows | i.e. from the symbol‘s center point to the next symbol‘s center point |
| Offset | offset of symbols along the row of symbols with reference to the origin | |
| Shift | shift of symbols from symbol row to symbol row | A shift <>0 causes the symbols not to be placed at the same level from row to row. |
| Align Symbols to Line | When enabled, the library or text symbol sued for the filling will be aligned into the direction of the symbol row (applying the angle, see above). | |
| Clipping | When enabled, the library or text symbol used for filling is clipped at the object‘s perimeter line. | This option prevents the symbol to protrude beyond the object‘s perimeter. |
Examples
The next table shows some display options offered by the layer type „Fill with Symbols“. For clarity, the direction of the symbol rows is highlighted by dashed lines. The origin is highlighted as well.

| Appearance / Display | Comments |
![]() |
Angle (to Y-axis) 0° Distance (between symbol rows) 50 m Displacement 0 m Dist of 20 m Offset/Shift: 0/0 m Align Symbols: OFF Clipping: OFF |
![]() |
Angle (to Y-axis) 30° Distance (between symbol rows) 50 m Displacement 10 m Dist of 20 m Offset/Shift: 0/0 m Align Symbols: OFF Clipping: OFF |
![]() |
as before, but: Align Symbols: ON Clipping: ON The symbols are aligned with reference to the symbol rows (dashed) and do not protrude beyond the object‘s perimeter. |
Example
Path: Examples\Graphic\Object Appearance\Fill with Symbols tab (File No. 4+5)
The effect of an offset and/or a shift of <>0 can be seen in the examples below.
| Appearance / Display | Comments |
![]() |
as before, but: Offset: 10 m Shift: 0 m At a shift of 0 m the symbols are placed at the same level in direction of the symbol rows. |
![]() |
as before, but: Offset: 10 m Shift: 5 m At a shift <>0 m the symbols are lifted by the entered shift from symbol row to symbol row, in direction of the symbol rows. |
The settings are applied in the same way to other objects filled with symbols being located distant from the origin. The reference point when specifying
- Distance
- Displacement
- Dist of
- Offset
- Shift
stays to be the origin.
Example
Path: Examples\Graphic\Object Appearance\Fill with Symbols tab (File No. 6)

Fill of Symbols: With fillings distant from the origin (see the object to the top right in the picture above) the reference point for Angle, Distance, Displacement, Dist of, Offset, and Shift stays to be the origin at (x, y) = (0,0).
